Code: US-482-1112 Life-Sharing Communities for and with individuals with developmental disabilities
Camphill Communities in North America is part of the international Camphill movement of more than 100 communities in 22 countries.
|
Country: United States Description of the voluntary activity: Volunteers, known as co-workers, come from diverse backgrounds. Some come for a short time of six months to a year, or for a therapeutic training; others make a longer-term commitment. Living and working in Camphill is more than a job, it is an attitude to life, the heart of which is relationships. Living and working together and building relationships with people of all ages and abilities is both challenging and rewarding. Co-workers joining a Camphill community can participate in a variety of experiences that can include:
• supporting individuals with disabilities in the home, classroom, or at work on the farm, gardens, or in one of the various craft workshops, such as weaving, pottery, stained glass, woodworking, candle-making or bakery;
• taking a group of youngsters on a hike or field trip;
• cooking wholesome food for the house community together with others
• celebrating seasonal community festivals.
Working environment: Camphill promotes social renewal through community living with children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities.
The Camphill approach honors the spiritual integrity of every human being, regardless of ability or handicaps, and recognizes the individual’s need and right to lead a full life that includes material, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Camphill provides education, support and empowerment in an environment in which every individual’s potential can unfold. Founded in Scotland in 1940, Camphill’s principles and practices are informed by anthroposophy: a worldview that supports the human being to engage in the process of discovering our wholeness and in doing so, acting upon and transforming the world.
Most Camphill communities are situated in a rural setting and provide opportunities for agricultural and horticultural work as a contribution to a sustainable world ecology. Working environment: Prespa is a rurally isolated community of 1800 people living in the mountainous border region of northern Greece by a pair of lakes. Of strategic importance during wars in the region the area remained sensitive after the Greek civil war. Many local people emigrated during this period decimating Prespa’s population. The lakes were declared a national park in 1974 and the park is unique in Greece as being the only one with living communities within its boundaries. The advent of an irrigation system in the mid sixties saw a move away from a traditional mixed agrarian economy to a monoculture based in growing white haricot beans. In the last decade tourism has begun to supplement the local economy.
It suffers from typical problems associated with rurally isolated communities: depopulation, inadequate services, a sense of social isolation, impoverishment of biodiversity, and a low level of professional skills. The local infrastructure is poor; few transport links, poor medical and educational facilities and little cultural provision. The community continues to suffer from the exodus of young people to urban centres, particularly young women.
The area is home to a still astonishing biodiversity, a rich cultural heritage, an array of archaeological remains and a wide ethnic diversity. It is one of the few remaining areas to which the Sarakatsani, a transhumant shepherding community, return each summer to pasture their flocks in the mountains.

Country: Ecuador Description of the voluntary activity: Would you like to help preserve Ecuador\'s cloud forests? Then why not apply for our volunteer program? You will live and work on Zoobreviven\'s Alto Choco Reserve helping with reforestation, reserve management tasks and learning about this unique ecosystem. All you need is enthusiasm and at least a month to spare. We do not make money from volunteers who come to stay, their work is payment enough.
We ask only that you pay a small fee (currently $260 a month) to cover living costs. This pays for lodging (accommodation, cooking and washing facilities) and lunch at the warden\'s house.
Work may involve reforestation with native cloud forest trees, reserve management (Trail maintenance, area patrolling (particularly with regard to illegal logging), protecton of the area, development of relations with local community), working in the botanical garden or in our organic vegetable garden. You are of course most welcome to suggest your own projects as many volunteers have in the past.
We’ve had volunteers of all ages, from a wide range of backgrounds and many different parts of the world. Time spent with us may be part of a program of study, a vacation or gap-year. As well as being a hugely educational opportunity we of course want volunteers to have fun and make new friends. Working environment: Work on the Reserve
Reforestation
One of the key initiatives on the reserve is our cloud forest reforestation program. This program involves collecting seeds and cuttings from native trees on the reserve and growing them in our tree nursery. When they are large enough the seedlings are planted out in deforested areas of the reserve or given to other local reforestation projects.
The Botanical Garden
The reserve\'s botanical garden was established as part of our community education program and contains around 20 varieties of orchid. To maintain the garden in good condition requires occasional maintenance work, such as rebuilding orchid containers and clearing paths.
Marking Reserve Boundaries
It is very important that the reserve boundaries are clearly marked to prevent woodcutters inadvertently felling trees within the protected area. This involves walking to the limits of the reserve and erecting signs.
Helping in the Organic Vegetable Garden
Some of the volunteers\' food is grown in our organic garden. Here you can help with planting and tending the vegetables.

Country: New Zealand Description of the voluntary activity: If you have solid skills and experience, are aged at least 20 years, and can commit to a minimum of three months or more, then get in touch and let us know which areas you would be interested in. A clean drivers licence and leadership skills are essential and experience of the voluntary sector is desirable.
At Tararu Valley there's lots to be done and we're more than willing to award partial or full scholarships to skilled and qualified people that share the Sanctuary values & vision. The roles are outlined below. They are not fixed and we look for people who can take on different aspects of different roles.
Working environment: Our Sanctuary is located on the sheltered side of the Coromandel Peninsula and feels quite remote, though we're only a half hour drive (1 hour bike ride/1.5 hrs walk) from the small town of Thames, and a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland. Other fields are the participation with human rights agencies and people who want a better world, legal humanitarian assistance for women, aids organizations, health and medical centres, civil defends, youth information office, service to eldery or youngers, educational social programs in public and rural schools, teaching english, etc.
CHILD CARE:
This program is dedicated to volunteering in NGOs for children. We can place you in some exciting social and humanitarian programs in collaboration with a large number of orphan, street children centres, children hostels, children worker and centres for infant care in rural or urban communities. You can help children of low economic resources who come from poor homes; some have mothers in prison and many other difficulties in their young lives. In many cases they have been abandoned by their parents. You can help them improve their living conditions through volunteering in one of these institutions. Depending on your own skills and interests, you can teach English, music, dance, maths, computer or collaborate cooking, eating, bathing and personal development, administrative tasks, homework help, activities and general care for the children or any number of activities - or generally just spend quality time with the children. Furthermore, you can participate in the rehabilitation process to their families and society.
AIDS:
Our program is designed to collaborate and participate in health clinics, non-profit organizations or government agencies working with this devastating HIV/AIDS disease. As a volunteer, you can assist in developing sexual health education, promote prevention programs and training seminars for groups like lay health professionals and sex trade workers. In addition, you can assist in the medical and psychological attention and antiretroviral therapy programs. There are also opportunities to provide comfort and support directly to patients, their families and the community. You can make visits to hospices and medical facilities, which really provides you with a sense of the personal side of this disease.
HUMAN RIGHTS:
Our host Human Rights organizations seek to promote and protect individual rights. The activities of the organisation include: human rights education to youth and children and teachers in schools, women’s rights (emphasis on reproductive and domestic rights) education in rural areas, psychological attention in crisis, legal pursuit of human rights cases, foreign governments abuse of local interests, and more. They are located in different Ecuadorian cities, but we can offer you the opportunity in Quito (capital city of Ecuador) in one of our collaborator organizations in some areas of the human rights.
TEACHING ENGLISH:
Our English teaching project in Ecuador is located in the urban and rural communities. Volunteers also have the opportunity to explore and learn or improve the Spanish language. Most of the volunteers working in this project work as a teacher in a private or public elementary school. Responsibilities of volunteers include teaching simple English and the practice of simple conversational English with the children. Additional help with health, sanitation, and extra curricular activities are also expected. We believe education is the key to enabling this South American country to rise above its poverty. You will help in this process by teaching a class for some hours each day from Monday to Friday. Volunteers are free to use a variety of methods like singing songs, repeating words and playing with flash cards. The aim of your work is to help the children to enjoy learning English.
HEALTH / NURSING:
Our health/nursing programs welcome anyone thinking of taking up nursing or alternative health. By working on this program, you will make a real contribution in hospitals, clinics and NGO's. Your help is needed throughout Ecuador to help the Ecuadorian population in the poorest urban or rural areas. Our host medical centres and patients welcome medical students, specialist, nurses, etc. The key requirements in our health/nursing volunteer programs are initiative, enthusiasm and readiness to work in unfamiliar circumstances. You will be involved in the day-to-day running of medical centres, observing or directly providing general assistance to the doctors and nurses or you might help maintain the files, help at the reception desk or in the nursery, assist with patient check-ups, etc.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS:
We help different communities to improve their living conditions, without altering their culture or their customs. We have training programs in the areas of Agriculture and domestic animals, Productivity (Micro-enterprise, micro-credits, etc), Conservation, Infrastructure and Construction among others.
GENERAL CONSERVATION PROGRAMS:
Work in the midst of the most spectacular Ecuadorian biodiversities where projects range from maintaining to research. Your help is needed in the preservation, investigation, environmental education and management of the Ecuadorian flora, fauna and landscapes. We work in collaboration with a big number of private and public reserves, National parks and NGOs throughout Ecuador (Andes, Coastal, Amazonia and Galapagos Islands). Environmental projects such as reforestation, agroforestry, organic and sustainable farming practices, permaculture, tree nursery, biological research, environmental education (focused to promote the protection and conservation), recuperation and regeneration of the ecosystem are available. Ecuadorian dry, cloud, rain and mangrove forest wait for you. Live in a world of plenty nature and enjoy it while volunteering.
ANIMAL CARE
The goal of this program is to rescue, rehabilitate and relocate confiscated animals to their natural habitat. You as volunteers will feed animals and clean and repair cages. In addition, you will help to build new cages and improve existing facilities to provide more natural environment for the birds and animals. Volunteers are needed to gather food from the forest for animals in captivity, introduce the food to the animals, monitor progress, consult with the biologist, and under supervision of the biologist and centre staff, teach the animals how to eat and other behaviours they need to know in the wild.
VETERINARY MEDICINE
You can combine a veterinary placement with an animal care placement, working in a zoo, animal rehabilitation centre or animal clinic. You may be able to spend some time concentrating on the veterinary practice. Working as a veterinary volunteer, you will be involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortems, meat inspections and the routine treatment of domestic farm animals and pets. These programs are available to you in Amazon Region, Machalilla National Park, Galapagos Islands, Baños, Guayabamba and many other places throughout Ecuador.
AGRICULTURE, ORGANIC FARM AND AGROFORESTTRY PROJECTS
All these projects are oriented to preserve the nature and the ecosystem. On the farms volunteers will find a lot of degraded areas, caused by overgrazing and inappropriate cultivation. Objective of the projects is the protection against soil erosion and nutrient loss. The agroforestry is a combination of agriculture and forestry and it can be seen as the most sustainable land form used in the conservation. Today there is a need of organic farms or family plots. Generally, the plots are small, next to the house and contain vegetables, fruits, herbs, medicinal plants and ornamental among other but the agroforestry is used in the reserves, national parks, etc.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION WORK
If you are looking for a rewarding experience to provide decent housing for a family in need, join our Volunteer Programs in Ecuador which offers a vibrant cultural and humanitarian experience. Many Ecuadorian families live in substandard, overcrowded and unhealthy conditions. With your help, more deserving families can have decent places to call home. Help repairing fences, roofs or cabins, assistance and supporting with construction of water pipes, houses, etc. Our objectives are to help Ecuadorian families benefit from available and existent housing programs.
MICRO-ENTERPRISE PROJECTS
These projects consist in the preparation of different groups of people, with little or no economic resources, to help them create small one-person businesses. This activity will allow them to obtain a small self-earned income to better provide for their families.
The volunteer will assist small enterprises to produce handicrafts or collaborate in the administrative task. We provide training in the following areas:
- Processing recycled paper
- Create ecological post cards with floral and Ecuadorian topics, taking advantage of the limited resources at hand
- Creation of ornamental candles
- Porcelain figures

Code: KE-579-649 WEPOGA- the organisation
Established in 2002 by Benson Alakonya Keya, WEPOGA (Western Province Organic Growers' Alliance of Kenya) is a CBO (community based organisation) located in the Bungoma and Butere Mumias districts in the Western Province of Kenya
|
Country: Kenya Description of the voluntary activity: We need you
As well as donations, WEPOGA relies heavily on volunteers in order that our many programmes can continue. We welcome people from all over the world, of all ages and genders, who can offer help through their experiences, skills and hard work. Although there are specific roles that need filling, we also encourage individuals who have alternative project ideas (as long as they fit in with WEPOGA's aims and objects) to contact us. We want you to get as much out of your experince as possible whilst at the same time, making a difference in the lives of some of the most poverty-stricken people in Kenya.
Volunteer with our organic farming programme
We need volunteers who can help us to run our educational serminars. The topics we promote at the moment are:
1. Organic pesticides
2. Organic fertilizer
3. Intercropping
4. Crop rotation
5. Integrated Pest Management
6. Double digging
7. Animal husbandry
8. Mixed cropping
9. Agroforestry
10. Water harvesting
11. Cooperative farming
We are also always open to more ideas from experienced persons in either organic farming, agroforestry, land managment, environmental studies and other related subjects.
As well as being part of the education and advice branch of WEPOGA, we need volunteers who can help with manual labour on our newly purchased land in Shibanze. This is good, honest, hard work! Lots of sweating, digging, planting and carrying, all for a good cause.
Working environment: Costs and general information
Until the compound is built at the Shibanze demonstration plot, volunteers are housed with a local family just outside the main town of Bungoma in a village called Kabula. You will sleep in a traditional mud house and have all your meals provided for by the family you stay with. The cost per week for accommodation and food is US$50 (US$200 per month) and is paid directly to the family you are placed with. In addition, volunteers are also required to make a minimum one off donation of US$200 directly to WEPOGA to cover administration costs and to help enable us to keep our projects going. We can only ever estimate how much money you will need for personal spending (about US$300 per month), as this depends entirely on what you like doing in your spare time!
Volunteer placements are for a minimum of 3 months, although we do make exceptions for highly skilled persons. The reason for the minimum period is to ensure continuity of projects and that persons volunteering are serious about what they want to be able to offer WEPOGA, as well as being serious about what they want to get out of it for themselves. For every 3 months you volunteer, you can have 2 weeks off mid-placement to sample the delights of Kenya and its neighbours, be that on safari to places like the Maasai Mara, city visits, trips to the coast or across the border to Uganda or Tanzania.

Required experience: Volunteer at the Tumaini Academy and with other social projects
We need volunteer classroom assistants to help out on a daily basis at the Tumaini Academy school. As classes are large, it is not possible for the teachers to provide one to one support for every child and so classroom assistants are always welcome.
Volunteers are required to provide hands-on help with the children (i.e. with writing skills), help with PE lessons and help to tidy the classroom at the end of the day.
The children's first language is the local Luhya dialect but they are required to learn English and Swahili. Qualified teachers wishing to volunteer must bare in mind that we already have trained teachers leading the lessons and that your role would be primarily as an assistant, except when required to help with English!
Funds permitting, WEPOGA aims to bring mobile clinics to some of the most remote areas in our districts of influence. These clinics are responsible for providing advice, help and basic medical attention in the communities we opperate in (treating minor infections), as well as providing the children at the Tumaini Academy with regular health checks. We desperately need trained nurses, doctors or medical students to volunteer.
In the future, we would also like to run educational programmes concerning HIV and AIDS awarness, providing support, advice and, of course, education. This programme desperately needs volunteers as there is a serious lack of access to help and advice for sufferers who live far from major towns and cities.
There are many other social programmes that also require volunteers such as the nutritional education programme, but once again, we always welcome ideas from experienced people willing to volunteer as WEPOGA continually looks to expand and improve on the services we provide to our members and the communities we service.
Volunteer in fundraising and administration
As with all organisations, WEPOGA always needs volunteers to help with fundraising and administration. We need people who are able to write grant applications and source potential donors as until WEPOGA is able to become self-sufficient (our dream for the future), we require continous outside support.
As well as fundraising, we also need people to help us manage the day-to-day running of WEPOGA, responding to emails, updating the website, helping with the monthly newsletter (writing and distributing) and helping to organise WEPOGA's diary with regard to seminar and visit dates.

Code: NP-816-1069 English and other subject teacher for Schools and Orphanages
|
Country: Nepal Description of the voluntary activity: Teaching English and other subjects to rural students at village primary schools, secondary schools, nurseries, local communities, orphanages. Will be asked to participate in various school activities. Our volunteer teaching opportunities are available two weeks to five months round for placements mainly located in the villages.
Working environment: Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and there are many opportunities to combine a holiday with some voluntary work. Volunteers experience life in both a rural and urban area, which is quite different from the banana pancake trail followed by the average tourist. VSSN is a Non government organization which places volunteers in schools and orphanages for two to five monthsalso short stays are arranged. An initial fee covers all food and accommodation, and includes an orientation course with lessons in Nepali, cultural tours and lectures, and social events. Most people in Nepal can't afford to travel, and in the villages there is little chance of contact with the outside world. Volunteer teachers enable students to form relationships with someone from another culture, and the teachers can learn different teaching methods and techniques. Mainly, volunteers assist the regular school teacher so volunteers do not need to have any teaching background. Volunteers are also welcome to teach different subjects e.g. mathematics, history, science, geography, computer, technologies, music and other subjects. All higher education in Nepal is in English, so it is vitally important that children must learn English to continue further higher education. A trained teacher is committed to raising standards in schools in Nepal, and with an adult literacy rate of 51% for men and 24% for women there is plenty of room for improvement.
Volunteers have a light schedule of three to four lessons a day. Schools usually have a very dull curriculum of rote learning and pointless exams, so extra activities such as sports and games are really appreciated by the children. It's also a good idea to bring posters, pictures, music tapes and so on to brighten up lessons. Volunteers often find the first couple of weeks in school difficult to cope with; a volunteer, from America, explains: "When I first arrived, I was very shocked by the lack of resources and the harsh discipline. For example, in the nursery class, three and four-year-olds have to sit in rows on benches and wait for a turn at coloring in one book on the teacher's desk. There is very little communicative teaching here. The first morning I was here I heard a strange chanting sound. I thought it was a religious ceremony, but it was actually the children studying. Reciting from textbooks, parrot fashion, is the main teaching method. Initially, I was very critical of the school, but the teachers are all doing the best they can with the few materials and training available. Many of the teachers are university students who are supporting themselves through college on their pittance of a salary. One of the best things about working in Nepal is the openness and friendliness of the people. All the staff and students have made me feel so welcome.”
Despite the teaching methods, the children are often able to communicate well in English. Another volunteer, says, "Because all the subjects are taught in English, even quite young students can understand. It is possible to have a much deeper level of communication with them than with a typical Japanese high-school student."
In Nepal, hardly a week goes by without some kind of festival. Schools are relaxed about volunteers taking time off, so there are plenty of chances to head for those big hills. Volunteers live with a host family near the school or they stay at the orphanage in a separate room which will depend on volunteer’s choice and availabilities. Children from the orphanage go to school during day time so volunteer will be teaching in the school, during morning and evening volunteers will be helping orphanage children to do home-works or volunteer can organize some extra activities.
In Nepal, it is believed guests are sent from God and they are treated accordingly. Host families are generally so kind, volunteers may want to be adopted permanently. Most people get up around 5:30am and very little happens after 9 or 10pm. After a few painful mornings, though, it feels surprisingly good.
Volunteering is not always easy, and conditions in Nepal are at best described as "basic." The majority of volunteers, however, end up staying for longer than they intended. A volunteer English teacher says: "In Japan I earned a lot of money for very little work, and I enjoyed a very high standard of living. I know I won't be able to earn that much when I return to Britain. Coming to Nepal has put this into perspective. A family here could live for a month on the money I used to spend in one night in Shibuya. This is also a great place to get healthy after three years of continuous late night drinking."
